Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) Michigan Tech Research Institute has been tasked by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to identify 5-10 potential sites for a closed VII test track facility in southeastern Michigan, and is currently working in cooperation with the Michigan International Speedway located in southeastern Michigan. Consideration of a test track facility is an integral part of the overall VII program and vision for the State of Michigan. We used a combination of geospatial, economic, and stakeholder inputs to determine the best possible location for a VII test facility. Stakeholder input was assembled using interviews, meetings, informal discussions, and an online questionnaire. A list of desired attributes for the test track facility was generated from the stakeholder input, and the attribute list was used to guide the geospatial and economic analyses. A closed access test track facility would be considered an enabler for VII research and technology development in the State of Michigan. This facility will put the State in the forefront of VII technology and will create jobs. The working mission of the facility is to provide a collaborative center of excellence for closed-access VII evaluation and testing to advance research, safety, and product development. Such a facility would serve academia, industry, NGOs, and public stakeholders. |
